When Claudia and I made plans to meet up, I knew that I wanted to find something new. After attending a meeting where an attendee mentioned going to a tiki bar, I remembered how much fun I’d had at The Jungle Bird in Sacramento. So naturally, meeting at Los Angeles’ oldest operating tiki bar, Tonga Hut was next up on my list.
Settling in to our cozy booth, I browsed the drinks menu. For the first round, I moseyed up to the bar and order the COBRA’S FANG (Demerara 151 Bum, Passion Fruit, Falernom, Lime & Spice). Why? Because a Mai Tai is a Mai Tai and I wanted something unique.
It was absolutely delicious. I mean, just look at it.
As our conversation progressed, we talked about our favorite creative passions. We celebrated her upcoming publication of one of her favorite pieces in a well renowned literally journal. And, I remembered how much I loved writing fiction as opposed to creative non-fiction. Not to mention that I would love to write fictionalized short stories about different periods of my life. As we drank our drinks and enjoyed each other’s company, I remembered how good it feel to have friends that creatively push you further.
My next drink, the HONI-HONI (Trader Vic’s Spin on The Mai Tai For The Whisky Drinker) was also fantastic. It was smokey, delicious and exactly what I wanted as a second drink.
Tacos were provided by Durango’s Tacos (IG @DURANGOS_TACOS). I ordered the special: 2 Tacos, Rice and beans for $9. The Asada and Barbacoa hit the spot.
Time at Tonga Hut and the subsequent tacos were perfect way to end an early evening of drinks, conversations about delicious dreams.
